When the Party began restructuringfor it was undertaken at the Party's initiativeit was understood that a diversity of opinionspluralism, that iswould be expressed within the framework of socialism, and that the "mouthpieces" of these opinions would not forget the principle of our press's Party spirit, its competence and responsibility. ...

But when...as in the magazine Looming [Creativity] (No. 11, 1988)the 1940 revolution in Estonia is called a "Bolshevik occupation" and a call is sounded for liberation from it, when it is proposed in the same place that the Estonian Republic be renamed the "Estonian Soviet Zhdanovist Republic"excuse me, this is not pluralism, it is pure extremism, an anti-Soviet orgy. ...

Sometimes one marvels at how far some of our editors go with these ideological "excursions." I open the magazine Vikerkaar [Rainbow] (No. 11, 1988)and I can't believe my eyes. In an article headed "Time of Horrors," M. Laar tells me that "the June 22, 1941, military conflict between Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia saved us from the worst," that the "forest brothers"accomplices of the fascistscame into being primarily for self-defense and the defense of their homes, and that, in general, the primary cause of the bloodshed in Estonia was the Soviet occupation of the republic and the establishment of a regime of terror there. There is no denying that when Hitler is adjudged to have been the "savior of the Estonian people," what we have is an attempt to let any concept of morality pass.
