(Obituary)-VASILY IVANOVICH KOZLOV. (Pravda, Dec. 3, p. 3. Complete text:) Hero of the Soviet Union Vasily Ivanovich Kozlov, a prominent Party and state figure of Belorussia, member of the C.P.S.U. Central Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Presidium of the U.S.S.R. Supreme Soviet, Chairman of the Presidium of the Belorussian Republic Supreme Soviet and member of the Bureau of the Belorussian Communist Party Central Committee, died on Dec. 2, 1967, after a prolonged and severe illness.

V. I. Kozlov was born in 1903 in the village of Zagradye, Zhlobin District, Gomel Province. He began his working life as a worker in railroad transportation. In 1927 he entered the ranks of the Communist Party. After graduating from the Communist University in 1933, V. I. Kozlov, as director of a Machine and Tractor Station and then as First Secretary of the Starobin and Cherven District Party Committees, participated actively in the carrying out of collectivization. In 1940 Vasily Ivanovich was promoted to the post of Vice-Chairman of the Belorussian Republic Council of People's Commissars, and in 1941 he was elected Second Secretary of the Minsk Province Party Committee.

In the years of the Great Patriotic War, V. I. Kozlov, by decision of the Belorussian Communist Party Central Committee, worked behind enemy lines as First Secretary of the Minsk Province and City Underground Party Committees. With his characteristic Bolshevik energy, Vasily Ivanovich carried on extensive work in the creation of underground Party organizations and partisan detachments, headed one of the largest partisan units in the republic and distinguished himself as an outstanding leader of the partisan movement. The military rank of major general was conferred on him.
