The 90th Anniversary of the Voennaia Mysl' Journal

On June 1, 2008, we are celebrating the 90th anniversary of the day when the first issue of the Voennaia mysl' (Military Thought) journal was published. Voennaia mysl' is a military theoretical journal of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, and it is one of the oldest printed editions of our country's armed forces.*

It was the Voenniy sbornik (Military Digest) magazine that had served as a prototype of Voennaia mysl' in the pre-revolutionary period of the Russian history. It was founded in 1858 under the initiative of D.A. Milyutin, professor of the Imperial Military Academy. This periodical would reflect the issues of military politics, military art and other problems of military science. The magazine was very popular in this country, and it was published to promote military knowledge distribution in the Russian Army.

After the Revolution, the All-Russian General Staff issued Order No.275 of May 14, 1918, which prescribed that the publication of a weekly military scientific journal under the name Voennoie delo (Trade of War) should be launched. The first issue of the journal was published on June 1, 1918. This date is officially considered to be the day when Voennaia mysl' was founded, though the journal received its present name as late as on January 1, 1937 (Voennoie delo was succeeded by Voennaia nauka i revolutsia (Military Science and Revolution), Voennaia mysl'i revolutsia (Military Thought and Revolution), Voina i revolutsia (War and Revolution).

* The journal was published under different names: from June 1, 1918 till June 1920 it was bearing the name Voennoie delo; in 1921 - 1922, Voennaia nauka i revolutsia; in 1922 - 1924, Voennaia mysl' i revolutsia; in 1925 - 1936, Voina i revolutsia; from January, 1937, Voennaia mysl'.
