M.A. GAREYEV, General of the Army, Doctor of Military Sciences

Mahmut A. GAREYEV was born on July 23, 1923, in Chelyabinsk. In 1941 he finished the Tashkent Infantry School. He served in the Soviet Army for over 50 years. M.A. Gareyev fought in the Great Patriotic War – as World War II is known in Russia – on the Western, Third Belorussian and First Far Eastern Fronts. He was wounded and shell-shocked several times. After the war he graduated with honors and a gold medal from the Frunze Military Academy (1950) and from the General Staff Military Academy (1959). He held various command and staff posts in the Belorussian, Far Eastern and Ural Military Districts. In the Belorussian Military District M.A. Gareyev commanded a regiment, a motorized infantry division, and a training tank division; he was chief-of-staff of an army, and served as chief-of-staff of the Ural Military District, as head of the Military Science Administration, and deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the U.S.S.R Armed Forces GHQ. He did military diplomacy jobs: in 1970-1971, he was chief-of-staff of the chief military adviser in Egypt, and in 1989-1990, military adviser to the Afghan President and Supreme Commander. His last post was that of deputy head of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces. Currently he is President of the Academy of Military Sciences and full member of the Academy of Sciences of Tatarstan.
