Politics. APEC Summit in Auckland

Author: Sergei Goncharenko

APEC held its latest summit meeting in September 1999 in Auckland, New Zealand. Previous meetings of this type were held in Seattle (USA, 1993), Bogor (Indonesia, 1994), Osaka (Japan, 1995), Manila (the Philippines, 1996), Vancouver (Canada, 1997), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, 1998). All of them, the summit in Auckland being no exception, attracted the attention of the world community and were important events in international life.

During its ten years of existence (beginning in November 1989), APEC, or the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, has become a broadly representative and influential international organization, of which 21 states and territories in the Asia- Pacific Region are currently members. The most active participants in APEC are the US, Japan and China, which, due to their immense economic importance and great influence in world politics and economics, set the tone for all of the forum's activity (GDP of these three states exceeds $13 trillion, that is, it constitutes the lion's share of total GDP of all the forum members, which is estimated at almost $16 trillion). Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and. Vietnam are also members of APEC. They play a lesser part in world politics and economics, but within APEC they are considered (at least formally) relatively equal partners, and this is perhaps the most important feature of APEC.

Russia has been participating in the APEC forum since 1998, and the Auckland summit was the second meeting of this type at which it was represented. Vladimir Putin, Chairman of the Russian Government, led Russian's delegation at the summit in Auckland. The official Russian delegation also included I.S. Ivanov, Foreign Minister, A.G. Shapovaliants, Economics Minister and Chairman
