Current Trends in the Development of the British Armed Forces

Abstract. This paper looks at the main trends in the development of the British Armed Forces, which is assumed to be a leading military and political ally of the United States; it focuses on the development prospects of the country's armed forces, both in the near future and in the long term.

When analyzing the armed forces (AF) worldwide, one typically starts with such countries as the United States and China. At the same time, nowadays other

states in the West are also witnessing interesting developments, and this is certainly worth noting and analyzing, for it is obvious that despite its military might, the US Administration is not coping with the task of achieving world superiority since it cannot at once take part in several major conflicts that have been under way lately. Thus, for instance, in the Yemen conflict the active participant is the Saudi-led international coalition, which includes Egypt, Pakistan, Sudan, and others. In fact, it is only too plain that the top player there is Riyadh. In other conflicts, the United States likewise resorted to the assistance of allies (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Ukraine, Syria, etc.).

One of Washington's closest allies is London, which, regardless of radical changes in its foreign policy, continues to display devotion to special relations with the US; yet in reality, this loyalty is largely token. Thus, in early 2015, the British government announced that it was sending 75 military instructors to Ukraine to train Ukrainian servicemen. The UK is also active in other areas.
