After the Singapore Summit: The American Strategy for Denuclearizing North Korea

Abstract. This article analyzes the way in which American politicians and experts debate the problem of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, is analyzed from the viewpoint of how likely it is that a consensus can be reached in the domestic politics of the United States. The views of the most influential groups of the American establishment in the Democratic and Republican parties are examined in the context of current events in the region. The authors conclude that since these views largely coincide with the denuclearization policy of President Donald Trump, the administration and Congress will reach a full consensus on this issue.

The November 2018 midterm elections to Congress were expected to be quite vicious, since they were viewed by many in the United States as a vote of confidence in President Trump. This vote broke down into a number of problem areas (e.g., migration, trade wars, and interference in American elections) around which unprecedented passions raged. Among the most serious of these was the problem of denuclearizing North Korea, since nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula are undoubtedly not merely a destabilizing factor but a global threat.

the West truly believed the Kims' Communist regime in North Korea would undoubtedly fall in the atmosphere of liberal democratic triumph and the "end of history." However, the regime decided to save itself and embarked on the development of nuclear arms.
