This two-volume work under the general editorship of Pan Deli and prepared by coworkers of the Institute of East European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is a comprehensive study of the reform process in Russia. The book is part of a unique comparative project being carried out by the CASS and aimed at analyzing the contemporary state of and prospects for social reform in the PRC by comparing Chinese and foreign experience.
The conception of the book, which came out within the framework of the "main projects of the CASS" series, lies in an analysis and evaluation of the Russian, which differs from the Chinese, version of the worldwide reform process. According to the authors of the book under review, both versions were represented at the end of the 20th century by the experience of the PRC and then Vietnam, on the one hand, and the experience of the U. S. S. R., and after its collapse, of Russia, the CIS countries, and East European states, on the other. The group of authors proceeded from the fact that China and Russia, by virtue of the size of their territory, population, natural resources, and international influence, are the most comparable experimental platforms in terms of social reform and, in that respect, their reform experience could be the most edifying.
All the work was carried out along comparative lines, the structure and methodology of the research study are in keeping with the traditions customary in the PRC academic community, which should help to correlate the Russian realities under study with the corresponding examples, models, institutions, and practices of the PRC's reform practice.
